Do you think your pup has what it takes to be the LAFD's K9 mascot?
It is easy to participate! Submit your favorite photo of your furry friend and let us know why your dog is a hero (suggested entry donation is $10). Then get your family and friends to vote for your pet; each vote costs $1. The top 10 contest winners will get submitted to Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas and a panel of judges, for them to select the top Howling Hero!
Funds raised will help support the LAFD's new canine therapy program. First responders endure significant stress and trauma on a daily basis. The canine therapy dogs will be deployed to critical incidents and situations to help the LAFD personnel manage the stress and emotions they are experiencing. The LAFD Foundation's goal is to secure the funding for canine training, medical care, and long term needs of the dogs.Prizes
The 1st place Howling Hero winner will:

- Enjoy recognition as the LAFD mascot on KTLA and all LAFD Foundation social media channels, website and e-newsletter
- Join us at different LAFD events throughout the year
2nd and 3rd place winners will also receive a gift basket generously donated by Petco.
| Meet Teddy, the LAFD’S first therapy dog. In December 2020, the LAFD received its first therapy dog, Teddy, donated by the Patriotic Dog Service Foundation. Each therapy dog is paired with a LAFD handler who undergoes specialized training with their canine. Teddy and his handler, Susan Jensen, are dispatched to large incidents and fire stations to help combat signs of depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress. Your participation helps fund this critical program. |
