We nominated Doris because her story epitomizes the wonderful organization that is YGRR.
Doris emigrated to the US and YGRR in 2019. She lived a hard life as a street dog in Istanbul, Turkey. While good with people, she had trust issues and was very reactive with other dogs.
Despite two failed placements including the last one where the prior owner tried to have her euthanized, YGRR never gave up on her and took her back each time for further training.
We adopted her in January 2022.
Through training, patience and love, she learned to trust again and became social with many other dogs to the point where she loved and welcomed two other YGRR rescues, Leo and Waffles, who became part of our extended family. They both revered Doris in turn.
Doris lived a very active and happy life in the nearly two years she was with us. Her time with us ended abruptly on New Year’s Day in 2024.
We miss her.
In this picture taken in her last weeks, you can see the joy in her eyes. It was said that after a hug from Doris, The Grinch's heart grew three sizes that day!
