Uni, a 3-month-old Shar Pei/Bully mix, was rescued on Moloka‘i and brought to Maui by her parents, who are now believers of “love at first sight.” One look at her wrinkles, beautiful gray coat, and striking blue eyes, and they were done for! Uni’s mom plans to train her to be a therapy dog. She loves learning new tricks, playing in the water, and getting as many cuddles and belly rubs as she can take.

Michael “Tex” is an Ocean Safety Lieutenant at Tower 3, Hanakao’o Beach Park in Lahaina. A 20-year veteran of the department, he and his team were on the water and involved in rescue operations on August 8, 2023 and the following days. He has a 14-year-old, floppy-eared Chihuahua/Beagle mix (Cheagle) named Lucy, and two outdoor cats, Shadow and Phantom. After beating lymphoma in 2024, Mike feels even more motivated to continue saving lives.
