The story behind the photo
Fungi are the best and those who produce immaculate fruiting bodies are always a joy to find when out hiking. Inky caps (Coprinopsis atramentaria) are very interesting as to spread their spores the caps liquefy (deliquesce) especially when it becomes dry and rain cant help with spore dispersal. If you look around the base of large maple trees you might find several species of inky that love urban hard woods in Forest Park!
