Pet's Story
Sophie is an American Foxhound. She was rescued from an animal hoarder in Big Fork near Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He was using bait animals (horses and donkeys) to train his many dogs to hunt big game (bears etc.) She lived the first two years of her life tethered with a two foot chain and fed road kill. The dogs and many other animals were rescued by the state Humane Agent. Sophie, undernourished and riddled with ticks, was taken to the pound where all the dogs were taken into rescue, all but Sophie and another hound. She was scheduled to be euthanized. A kind lady (her saviour), saw her sad and desperate face and sprung her from the pound with plans to keep her until good home could be found.
Sophie (then Josie) came to our family in 2012 when we saw her on Pet Finder. We had just adopted a Treeing Walker Coonhound named Jenny and fell in love with the hound breed and decided she needed a companion. Along side Jenny, Sophie learned what being a house hound was all about. She was easy to train and eager to please.
She has always been a bit timid, but never shy and the sweetest combination of happy and “sad” you could ever know in a dog. Sophie never made a sound except for the very occasional bark until Jenny (who made enough noise for everyone) passed away 8 years ago. Since her passing, Sophie has developed an unmistakable wailing bay all her own. We think it’s because she doesn’t have Jenny to speak for her anymore.
She is truly a unique soul who is adored by all who know her. She loves long walks, sniffing everything, jerky treats and basking in the sun.
At 14, the walks are a bit slower, but Sophie is on her own time now, and we hope she has many years of basking ahead of her.
