Pet's Story
Symphony is blind. Blind from her birth from a stray in a TX shelter, she went from TX to OK and was on the list of dogs to be euthanized. She was picked up by a Chicago-area rescue when she was roughly a year old. They somehow saw her potential and believed that with a little investment of love and training, she could bring joy.
I met Symphony because the rescue had her train with the same place I had my other dog trained The school knew I was looking for a fur-sibling for my other young dog and thought Symphony might just fit the bill. Symphony had a rough start, for sure, but the rescue organization that saved her invested heavily in her success They got her the best professional training in the area and she was subsequently fostered for a while by the trainer to help her continue to build on her new social and obedience skills. Before she was ready to be adopted, she wasn't making good impressions. She was anxious around people and noises and didn't like to be touched very much. There was much growling and some snapping out of fear and anxiety. But she took to training quickly and her new boundaries helped her to start rebuilding confidence.
When I first met her, she took to me right away, which surprised everyone, so of course I had to keep her. Through a lot of love and practice, she's developed into a simply delightful and confident dog who loves to meet new people and go on adventures where she can sniff to her heart's content. She even managed to catch a possum in the back yard once!
Symphony might be blind, but she does NOT let that stop her from full out joy every day. She doesn't let a little thing like bumping into things stop her from exploring the world around her. She LOVES to be outside, especially in the sunshine, and if she can't be outside, she wants to be in my lap. Once Symphony connects with someone, her enthusiasm for that person cannot be contained and she will follow them anywhere.
For those who believe in divine coincidences....
I have congential hip dysplasia and have lived a fairly active life until more recently when the combination of surgeries and one set of ruptured tendons have put me permanently in a brace with a cane/crutch. I'd just about given up trying to improve on my situation when I met this intretpid blind dog, Symphony. After witnessing Symphony dauntlessly map out her new surroundings, bouncing off furniture and finding the fence line, I realized she was reminding me to never give up! And so I got back to work.
