Pet's Story
My son had begged for a dog for years. We wouldn't agree to get one until we felt he'd matured enough to be responsible for a pet. We finally relented last year when he was 10. On the drive to the shelter, we warned him that we wouldn't necessarily get the first dog we saw. They sat us in a room and brought in Coco, who was about 7 months old. She ran directly to my son, hiked her front paws up to his chest and began licking his face incessantly. He erupted with delight so, despite our warning, it was immediately clear that we were going to be adopting this soft, loveable little girl.
Though it seemed she'd been in a home, Coco was brought in as a stray without a collar. She'd been isolated while being treated for heartworms, and her owners were sought. No one claimed her, and she'd been in the shelter about six weeks when we met her. We left her there to be spayed and chipped, and when we returned to get her, another customer was there waiting for us. She said, "She's so cute, I was going to take her if you didn't show up!"
When we brought her home, we quickly learned that she's a door-dasher, and assume that may be how she came to be wandering on her own. She is full of energy, very affectionate and loves to be outside with her human family. She's brought so much joy, and a fair amount of mischief, into our lives! And she seems to appreciate the home we've given her. She doesn't even try to run away anymore!
