Pet's Story
Delilah was adopted 3 years ago from the Rhode Island SPCA and joined our family and became quite the pal to her fellow puggle sister, Lily. In July 2019, out of nowhere, she was rushed to Ocean State Animal Hospital after not having any will to move, eat or play. After admission, she was found to have extremely high platelets and her red blood cells nearly bottomed out. She needed so many tests, a blood transfusion, and had two long stays at Ocean State with a 50/50 chance that she'd make it. She was diagnosed with IMHA which is a type of anemia. Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is a major cause of severe anemia in American dogs. IMHA occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys oxygen-carrying red blood cells. For the next few months, we literally stayed up all night just watched you breathe, made sure your gums were always pink and made sure you always got your meds on time which were not limited to a steroid, blood thinner and an immunosuppressant. Now, she is doing better than ever. She gets routine bloodwork, check-ups by her specialist and is no longer on any medication after a long year of anxiety and stress. She is still the most playful and spunky little girl ever. It was a scary time and she persevered. We love you Delilah!
