Pet’s rescue story in 500 words or less
One night in 2018, I watched a plea being made by another shelter, and that’s when I saw the saddest looking dog I had ever seen. That was the first time I laid eyes on my Gracie girl. She had no fur on her body, was covered in mange, her legs looked like elephant feet, and she had no hope in her eyes. She was brought to SPCA of Brevard the very next day and began her healing journey.
Gracie spent 3 months in my office healing, but while she was on her own journey, she started to help other dogs, including her best friend Gasper. He hadn’t had a great life and only had a partial jaw and hated all other dogs. For some reason, he and Gracie developed a bond and they began to lean on each other.
As time passed, not only did Gracie’s fur grow back, but her spirited personality came to life! She became this magical red unicorn that you see today. People love to meet her wherever we go. In fact, she would wiggle her booty bigger and faster just so she could get love from anyone who would visit with her. Her magical unicorn charm and personality appealed to so many people that they began to show interest in adopting her. I had a full-blown meltdown! Consequently, I made her adoption official, and she was now going to be a part of my family forever!
Five years have passed since I adopted Gracie, and she has continually amazed me! She has made my life so much better than I could have imagined. She has been a helper dog to other scared dogs, a foster sister to countless other dogs and kittens, and a wonderful sister to my other dogs and bearded dragon. Gracie is also an ambassador for our rescue and attends events, helps with summer camp, goes to schools and businesses to “speak” with me, and she also visits assisted living facilities to brighten up residents’ days.
When she’s not spreading positivity and happiness to the community, she is my absolute best friend. All the dogs, bearded dragon and I go on vacations several times a year as a family. Gracie loves to go on adventures! We have hiked to about a dozen waterfalls in the mountains together. She sleeps under the covers beside me every single night and keeps her schnauzer sister, Zoe, entertained for hours on end. I could not imagine my life without this beautiful, perfect creature! When I think about how she looked when she first came into my life – sad and broken, it hurts my heart. But knowing now that she wants for nothing and is a part of my family, I am grateful that I get to spend every day with her.
