Why is Your Pet "Rescued (or Stray) and Gorgeous"?
Rescuing a dog almost always comes with surprises. But perhaps the loveliest surprise occurs when the dog makes things right in your life.
I adopted Nimh during the pandemic, when I desperately wanted a companion. She came from Georgia, where she was found abandoned with her two puppies. She was only a year and a half old.
At her first vet visit, it was discovered that Nimh had buckshot throughout her body and an injury that was badly healed in her left hip. She underwent hip replacement surgery, and now has a bionic hip.
Nimh soon began working with me. I am a marriage and family therapist, and she comes with me to my office as my therapy dog. She spends her day sitting on the couch between the couples I work with, often putting her head in one of their laps.
Nimh is one of the special dogs we call “empaths”. An empath has the ability to align with the feelings, emotion, and energy of those around her. In addition to therapy work, she often displays this gift at home. For example, when my grandfather passed away in 2021, my grandmother came to my house. Nimh spent the entire day with her head in my grandma’s lap.
I named Nimh after the 1980s cartoon 'The Secret of NIMH' because of her similarity to the timid but brave main character. NIMH also stands for National Institute of Mental Health, which makes her name even more fitting, given the work we do together.
Nimh adores people, even though it seems people have not always been very good to her. Her beauty lies in her sweet demeanor and ability to comfort those around her. She is my dearest friend – her favorite thing to do is sit next to me with her head in my lap.
I often think that Nimh is not really a dog, but a wise, gentle old soul. She came into my life when my boyfriend and I were having a difficult time. We both see Nimh as the glue that held our relationship together and gradually healed it. We are now married.
Nimh was the flower girl at our wedding.
