About Your Pet
Meet Pete! Pete (AKA Petester) is the poster boy for dog rescues. He is an 11 year old German Shorthaired Pointer mix and was born deaf. He has the softest fur and a heart of gold. Pete is so special and resilient in many ways. Pete’s story is one of rags to riches. He has survived being kicked and beaten by his first owner and shot by a disgruntled neighbor; escaped euthanasia; overcome his inability to hear to now living his best life with his mommy, daddy, and furry sister Tallie Jean. Pete does not let being deaf stop him. He is hyper-alert and has adapted to knowing when, what and where is expected by watching us and our movements and actions. One of our favorites is when he is in his fenced-in backyard at night and happily comes running when we give him the cue to come in by flashing the floodlight a couple of times. When he was young, he loved to run laps in the backyard at full speed, with many neighbors commenting on how he was the fastest dog they had ever seen. Running laps are mostly in his past, but he still enjoys patrolling the yard, playing with Tallie Jean, getting and giving love, and relaxing on his own bed. Any change in his environment or when he realizes he is going for a ride, his most unique trait shines. He flashes the cutest, most heart-warming smile, accompanied by the sweetest little snorts.
Why Your Pet Should Be Named the Next Tally Top Pet
Pete’s life started as a bird hunting dog. During his first year, he lived outside and often got into trouble digging in the neighbor’s garden. Birdshot is still showing up on x-rays to prove it. His hunting career, and almost his life, was cut short due to his deafness. His hunter/owner stayed frustrated with him, kicking him and beating him with sticks/pipes. Pete was scheduled for euthanasia because he was a tool that did not work. The hunter’s wife took compassion for Pete and reached out for help. Pete was connected with Deaf Dog Rescue of America (DDROA) who partnered with Deaf Dogs Rock to save Pete.
After being in a wonderful foster home, getting a great start to his new life, Pete was approved to join a DDROA Deaf Dog Ranch in California. DDROA planned his transport utilizing a team of volunteer drivers on a 2-weekend/30-leg transport, with a layover in Texas in between. Pete’s mommy and daddy were leg #3, from Tallahassee, FL to Chipley, FL. This ride ended in a “Transport Fail” because Pete’s mommy sat in the back seat with his head in her lap and fell in love. She made calls that following week and his trip to California was cancelled. At 1 year old Pete made the journey from Texas back to Tallahassee where he has lived happily for 10 years in his forever home! He is now a much loved, indoor pet with a warm bed and a large back yard where he can run and play with his favorite companion and “younger sister” Tallie Jean.
Pete may have been a Transport Fail, but he is now a Poster Boy for Dog Rescues and a veteran of rescue dog transports! Please show your support for our sweet survivor. Vote for Pete!
