Darel was raised in the Puppies Behind Bars program, learning basic commands and being socialized by a special inmate at a prison in CT. Just before he turned one, he became my partner and I trained him for 4 months to become a certified explosives detection canine. Darel’s bomb-sniffing career ended when I retired, but he soon found another job as a therapy dog. While Darel loved bringing joy to senior citizens, that wasn’t enough work for him and he began double duty as my service dog. When off the clock, Darel loves swimming and boating, but his favorite pasttime is playing bally, a hobby he picked up ‘in the joint’. He loves spending his summers Downeast, which he’s done for the past 9 years. Darel enjoys hiking the trails of Woodlawn, Acadia and especially Blue Hill as well as lounging at a friend’s cottage on Newbury Neck.
