Pet's Story or Bio
Bembo's name comes from a Renaissance poet, scholar, and churchman who lived in Venice. Our Bembo kept his wisdom to himself, although he often lay at the top of our stairs considering major philosophical problems, as in this photo. At night, he watched the skies; I think he believed The Truth Is Out There. Still, he was always ready for games of wit (where did I hide the tennis ball?) or a duel, e.g., he and I would lie about 3 feet apart on the patio with a tennis ball in between us to find out who was fastest. He was. Every time. His paws were the size of dessert plates.
Bembo succumbed to cancer a few months ago at age thirteen. He was probably the most Golden of Golden Retrievers that I have ever encountered. He shoulda been in pictures! My family and his brother Hakluyt (that's another story) miss him miserably.
