Connecting with Animals and our Community
Since 1946, the
Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) has been a resource for the city and a shelter for homeless animals. Through adoptions, spay and neuter assistance, education, field and community service, the AWLA positively impacts the lives of more than 6,000 animals in the community each year including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, reptiles and more.
Why Participate?
The AWLA receives funding through a contract with the City of Alexandria to provide animal sheltering and control services within city limits; however, those funds only cover a portion of the services offered by the AWLA, and to provide animals with the best quality of life that we can, we need your support!
Each entry and vote in our 2019 "Pets in the City" Photo Calendar Contest is a dollar that goes to the support of animals across Alexandria: from providing
emergency medical treatment to lost dog hit by a car to giving an unsocialized kitten a chance to learn to trust in
foster care. Your donations support not only animals in the shelter but throughout the city, with outreach programs like
Pet Care Fairs to provide rabies vaccines and other resources to pets in underserved communities and our
Crisis Care program to provide short-term lodging for pets of owners undergoing emergency life events.
Most of all, your support gives Alexandria's Animals
the gift of time. We strive to find the right placement for each animal who comes to us, and we know some animals need longer than others to learn to trust, to feel comfortable and how to be a pet. Your support means we do not need to limit the stay of our animals; we can give them the time they need to find their true selves and prepare for the next chapter in their stories.
Your donation makes all the difference to Alexandria's Animals. Show your support for all of the "Pets in the City" and register or vote for your favorites beginning June 1!
