About Us
The PEI Humane Society (PEIHS) is a managed admission shelter and animal welfare organization located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
Our mission is to advance animal welfare protection province-wide aligned to the Animal Welfare Act, and champion best practices in prevention, sheltering, and placement of companion animals.
The PEIHS cares for close to 1300 animals per year, including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and small critters. We practise spay and neutering before adoption to prevent pet overpopulation. All animals selected for our adoption program remain in the program for an unlimited time, provided they stay physically and mentally healthy or have health or behavioural issues the PEIHS has the resources to address.
The Capacity for Care pilot program was initiated at the PEIHS in 2014. This life-saving management model, practised today, helps our shelter humanely care for the animals in our facilities by encouraging shelter staff to think differently about the concept of "capacity." The PEIHS advocates for the humane treatment and training of companion animals. We rely on positive (reward and force-free) based training methods.
The PEIHS applies the Five Freedoms of Animals to the care we provide. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst; from Discomfort; from Pain, Injury or Disease; to Express Normal Behaviour and Freedom from Fear and Distress.
