NICU Hospital for my journeyPhoebe Putney Memorial Hospital
My NICU Graduate's JourneyLogan was born at 31 weeks and 5 days. There was concern during pregnancy that he would have a condition incompatible with life, a portion of his brain was not visible on ultrasound. The life-threatening condition was eventually ruled out. The concern then quickly shifted to his growth; he was not growing the way he supposed to. He weighed 2lbs 2.2oz at birth. He did great initially and then developed an ileus and had to be put back on oxygen, received a blood transfusion. He got over the ileus and eventually was moved to the step-down NICU where he stayed for 1.5 months to learn to feed. He came home after 78 days and was discharged home on oxygen. He remained on oxygen for another 1.5 months. He had to do physical therapy to get caught up with his motor skills. He continues to do speech therapy. He is a happy and healthy 4-year-old. He starts pre-k this fall. He has shown us that life may be full of obstacles, but they can be overcome no matter how small a person is.
What makes you proud of you NICU graduate? He has overcome doubt that was so heavy during pregnancy. He was born so small and yet did so well initially. Logan then overcame an ileus and then learned how to feed and eventually was able to say goodbye to oxygen. He worked so hard in physical therapy to catch up to his peers. He continues to work on speech. He is the toughest kid I know.
