NICU Hospital for my journeyThe Cape Breton Regional Hospital and the IWK Health Centre
My NICU Graduate's JourneyOur son was born at 32 weeks and was diagnosed with T.E.F (tracheoesophageal fistula) He had his first of many surgeries at 6 days old. When he was born he weighed 3lbs 13oz and at his lowest went down to 2lbs 9oz. He was our first born as his dad and I experienced 2 heart breaking miscarriage's prior to his arrival. Justin was our little fighter from day 1 and although we spent 99 days in NICU between our local hospital, The Cape Breton Regional Hospital (Sydney NS) and the IWK (Halifax NS) he always showed us his determination, from getting his feed tube out at 6 months to over coming many other obstacles in his life. He was on time with all of his mile stones, with the exception of his height. He was an early walker and very determined with everything he attempted.
What makes you proud of you NICU graduate? He is now almost 17 years and its been a few years since any dilatation surgeries. He plays High School Basketball and is very involved in the Harness Racing Community. Justin had to overcome being the "small" one for many years but never let comments bring him down. He has a huge heart for animals and other people and will stand up for what he feels is right or wrong. He's our Hero and he makes his dad and I proud on a daily basics.
