My NICU Graduate's Journey
Kane Thomas was born at exactly 30 weeks. He weighed 3 lbs. 4 oz. and was 16.5 long. He spent the first 64 days of his life in the NICU. Intubated right away and completely neutropenic it was very scary as far as germs for this little baby. Throughout that time as well he suffered from breathing difficulties, E. coli in his bloodstream and multiple blood transfusions. Also slow to gain weight and bad reflux. Upon discharge, he was failure to thrive and had multiple hospitalizations throughout his first year. On and off feeding tube as well.
Three years later, you would never know that this once little baby ever suffered through all the troubles he had. As the youngest of seven children, he knows his ABCs, colors, numbers, and talks more than most children his age. We tell him he is running for mayor as everywhere he goes he makes friends and strikes up conversations with kids and adults alike. His smile is contagious and makes everyone around him happy.
One week before he turned 1, I was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer and discovered it while breast-feeding him. It was a long difficult battle for myself, but I believe he is my savior and helped me survive cancer. Without him who knows what would’ve happened. His name means warrior and not only is he a warrior, he is my warrior to help me fight!
We will always have a special bond! Baby boy we love you so much!

What makes you proud of you NICU graduate?
What makes us proud of our son is how far he has come since birth. The first weeks and months were so scary as all of the uncertainty of his future. Looking back at all the difficult times feels like a blur as he is truly thriving in all aspects of life!
He is always happy, full of so much spunk and energy, and has the sweetest personality!
He is obsessed with anything that has to do with heavy equipment, excavators especially and knows every kind by name and color. Also can tell us his ABCs, count to 20, knows his shapes and colors.
As the youngest of seven children, he definitely gets a lot of attention and is always making everyone laugh. We know he was sent to our family to do amazing things and serve a special purpose.
