My NICU Graduate's JourneyBorn on Maui at 25 weeks, l lb, 14 oz. Flown to Oahu. First at Kapiolani Women and Children's Hospital, then Kaiser Hospital. Flown home to Maui after 3 months, two more weeks in hospital on Maui. Played soccer, baseball and football growing up. Now has a Masters Degree in Education and teaches 7th grade in an Intermediate School on Maui He fishes and dives for tako (octopus) and has mentored intermediate level students in Robotics competitions in Hawaii and on the mainland.
What makes you proud of you NICU graduate? In 1978 he only had a 10 per cent chance to survive. He was so small for awhile as a child and not as physically gifted as his siblings, but he didn't let that stop him from participating. He's a great teacher for intermediate students and all the kids he has mentored in robotics knew he cares. He has a kind heart and I'm proud of where he is as an adult.
