Please tell us about your Coronado Memory
Our fond memories of Coronado began in 1967. I was a single school teacher living in Mission Beach. I taught swimming and physical fitness the next two summers for the Coronado Unified School District. In February, 1968, I met a young Naval aviator on a Friday night at the O club at MCRD. We began many enjoyable dates in Coronado. He left in October, 1968 for the first of three Vietnam tours. We married on June 21, 1969 in La Jolla and brought our wedding party over on the ferry to Coronado, for our reception at the Hotel Del. As a treat, we booked one of the $25 Bridal Suites (with champagne) for our first night. As a surprise, the Del "upgraded" our room to the Presidential Suite! We worried about our bill, but we were assured it was not a mistake. Twenty-five dollars well spent! We had many return anniversaries at the Del, in smaller rooms. Bear retired after twenty years in the Navy. His work took us to Manhattan Beach, CA. Six years ago, we returned permanently to Coronado, to retire and make new memories with old friends and neighbors. The picture is of the Hotel Del's laundry truck that Bear drives for parades and special events. We smile to think the year is 1924 and this shiny new truck is parked out front to pick up laundry for this new cottage shown in the picture, the cottage we now call home. It's good to be back!
