Dad's Lessons - Lifelong Legacy
As the daughter of Coronado High School’s principal, my childhood was filled with wonderful memories. Our family photo appeared in the CHS BEACHCOMBER for 14 years. Those pictures now provide us with a cherished pictorial timeline. *Note in the 1955 photo I am wearing a hand-knitted letterman’s sweater signifying my future graduating Class of 1972, thanks to Mrs. Elizabeth Huser., the CHS music director. At age 60 I am still introducing myself to locals as “Mr. Seaman’s daughter” and delight in the stories that follow about him as their principal. Accompanying my dad to every sporting event, standing on his shiny black shoes to dance at an occasional prom, listening to him deliver countless inspirational speeches at graduation and watching him beam with pride over the accomplishments of his thousands of students, are just a few of the amazing memories that inspired me to follow in his footsteps and become an educator. Our home was always filled with his students and Friday night dinners were reserved for eating take-out from the Mexican Village with numerous CHS staff members. My father taught me through his actions and words the power of nurturing and nourishing a love for learning. But more importantly, he emphasized that it is our responsibility to use that knowledge for not only ourselves, but the betterment of our families, fellow man, and our world. I miss my Dad whispering his words of wisdom in my ear, but my memories of him are forever.
