My Coronado memories start in 1952-53 when I was a new Ensign assigned to a small craft attached to the Navy Electronics Laboratory on Point Loma. I discovered that just a ferry ride across the bay lay the sleepy village of Coronado and the very lively Mexican Village, which I visited as did many other naval personnel. Many years later as a newly admitted lawyer I watched as “the Bridge” replaced the ferries and made Coronado much more accessible.
By 1970 I had become a corporate/business lawyer in a large firm and was a Commander in the San Diego Naval Intelligence Unit. It was then that I was figuratively “struck by lightning” and became the civilian lawyer for Commander “Pete” Bucher, the CO of the USS Pueblo, in the Court of Inquiry into the capture of that ship and the conduct of the crew during eleven months of captivity. I did this on a pro bono basis and thought the Court of Inquiry would take, at best, a week. The Court, consisting of five admirals, was conducted in the theater on the Amphibious Base and actually lasted about two months.
During that time I fell in love with Coronado during the many, many trips back and forth to my home in San Diego. The whole experience will always be one of my favorite memories.
In 1989 I retired after 30 years of law practice and bought one of the first condos on the bay at The Landing and still live in that condo. I also became and still am active in several local organizations. There is no place in the world that my wife and I would rather live than in Coronado.
