Your Pet's Rescue StoryI was driving on I-4 in rush hour one morning when something small and fluffy tumbled out of the wheel well of the truck in front of me. I had no idea what it was, but I could see it was alive! I immediately stopped my car and jumped out in the middle of traffic to scoop up the little ball of fur.
To my surprise, it was a tiny kitten -- so small, he fit into the palm of my hand! I jumped back in the car, kitten in hand, and headed for the next exit. The kitten was obviously freaked out, as he was crying and climbing all over me and my car. Once we got home, I checked him out and found that he didn't have any physical injuries. Whew!
We took him to the vet, who estimated he was about 4 weeks old. We weren't sure what to do with him -- my boyfriend already had 2 cats at home and we weren't planning for a third. And to be honest, I wasn't much of a cat person as it was. But when I looked into his bright blue eyes, I knew that little guy was meant for me.
For the next few weeks, he had to be sequestered from our other cats until he could get his vaccines and such. He kept us up every night, crying outside our bedroom door until one of us got up and sat with him. I think he just needed to know that we were there, to see us and feel our warmth. He had clearly been traumatized from the I-4 incident, and maybe from losing his mother and who knows how many siblings.
His life before us was a mystery, but we knew he needed extra love and attention and we were happy to give it to him. That was 14 years ago; today, he's a lovable, mischievous little rascal who's just as adorable as he was the day he fell from that truck and stole my heart.
