Your Pet's Rescue StoryOn June 1, 2017, Aggie ran out into a busy roadway from behind a pile of trash and my husband, Bill, ran her over with his work truck. He rescued her by wrapping her in a rain coat and gently assuring her that he would get her help. He took her to the closest Veterinary Hospital and they took X-rays and ran tests to determine the extent of her injuries. Approximately 6 hours later, they determined that she had no internal injuries, however, she had several broken bones: leg, hip, spine and tail. They advised us that her injuries were too extensive for their veterinarians to repair and suggested that we take her to the University of Florida Veterinary School Small Animal Hospital. As luck would have it, UF had a cancellation in their schedule and could fit us in within three days time. The original Veterinarian kept her for those three days so that they could administer round-the-clock pain medication until we could get her to UF. UF admitted Aggie right away and operated on her the very next day. Miraculously, within 48 hours of her surgeries, Aggie walked out of UF on her own four paws. UF placed pins in her leg to repair the broken leg, a pin and an artificial ligament to repair her broken hip and left the spinal and tail fractures to heal on their own (which they both did, nicely). Aggie’s surgeries were followed up with 34 physical rehabilitation sessions and several canine massage therapy sessions, after which she was released from veterinarian care.
Although we wanted to keep Aggie with us, we did search for any possible owners. My husband canvassed the neighborhoods around the accident site and I called all of the local animal shelters, rescues and veterinarians. In no way did we want to give her up, but we also wanted to do the right thing if an owner did surface. Luckily that never happened and Aggie has been with us ever since!
Aggie is an absolute joy and is the little love of our lives. We live to spoil her and she rescued us just as much as we rescued her.
Aggie’s proper name is Agatha Christy Dempsey, because her origin story is a mystery.
