Your Pet's Rescue StoryKona came from a part of her rescue labeled 'special needs', due to her anxieties in social situations, especially in new and unfamiliar locations. I too have social anxieties, so we have become a bonded confident pair.
When I first got to the rescue event, I noticed Kona (then Bebe) at the back of the crate, with other 'special needs' dogs. When I asked about her, the rescue told me. "she won't go with a man...you may wanna look at another". Unfortunately, I was already hooked. I sat down next to the crate, leaned up against it and after a long while Kona moved towards me and gave me a sniff... I asked for a leash, and she exited the crate, walking past a ton of other dogs and puppies never reacting to any and walking perfectly on the leash.
After a quick potty break, I asked how much she was... It turned out someone had donated her adoption because they new she would be tough to rescue - not for me. For me she was perfect. So I donated enough for another to be rescued.
We now spend our time slowly exploring different places, restaurants, beaches and trails. When we first get somewhere new, she likes to sit on my lap, so she can look around and know is she is in a safe place while doing so, then she'll get down and find a place to lay down. I joke that she is a Queen, my lap her throne and she sits there to judge the other dogs who aren't on laps....
