Takanka was one of a litter at the Mendocino Coast Humane Society. He was picked because he was quiet and more interested in the person present then playing with siblings. He would run and chase anything thrown and would at times toss the toy in the air and catch it without coaching. His big eyes are heart melting. Although most likely a mix breed, he most resembles a Hovawart.

Reproductions of dogs named Hofewart have been found in documents and pictures dating back to the 13th century. The dog's name means "estate dog" or "farmyard warden" and they were used as courtyard guards.
