KCHA has been sheltering homeless animals, fighting animal cruelty and neglect, and helping pets and their people since 1935. But we aren't who we used to be.
Today, KCHA has a renewed enthusiasm for lifesaving, employing progressive sheltering programs like pet retention counseling and Trap-Neuter-Return to eliminate unwarranted euthanasia in Kanawha County, West Virginia.
We have consistently saved the lives of 90% of all admissions since September 2013.
Highlights
- Provided high quality care for 5,500 of Kanawha County's lost, homeless, abandoned and abused pets
- 2,500 pets were altered through our programs for low-cost spay and neuter
- 400 feral and free-roaming cats were saved through Trap-Neuter-Return
- Dismantled our longstanding crematorium as a symbol of our commitment to lifesaving
- Launched a new volunteer program
- Opened a private spay/neuter and animal care clinic on-site to better care for our own animals and address animal health.
Our WAGS (Wildly Achievable Goals) for the future include establishing a kitten nursery, repurposing an existing building into an Admissions Center to prevent disease and better serve the community, make additional improvements to the kennels in our facility, establish a mobile adoption unit/spay-neuter vehicle service, as well as a long term goal of establishing an off-site adoption center in the community.
KCHA is a private, tax-exempt organization who relies on compassionate donors for 80% of our funding. We are not a government agency, and do not receive general operating support from national organizations.
