Our Story
In 1958, E.L. Caldecott funded and built the first animal shelter in Greenwood County and formed the Humane Society of Greenwood. Since 2003, the Humane Society of Greenwood's animal care professionals have been contracted to operate the Greenwood County Animal Shelter. In addition to providing care for 150 animals daily, the HSOG staff promotes adoptions at its Adoption Center and off-site adoption events. They also work strategically with out-of-area rescue groups that adopt animals from the facility and re-home them in areas outside Greenwood. In addition to caring for homeless animals, from hamsters to pigs, the organization is a resource for reuniting lost pets with their families, offering services in its Dixie Walker Self Spay/Neuter Clinic, providing a community pet food bank to pet owners in need, recruiting foster volunteers to care for shelter animals in their homes, and educating the community about how to provide humane care to animals.
Mission Statement
Through life-saving strategies, we advocate for every animal in our care while being a resource to the community.
