Why is your dog a hero?
Tallulah Marlene was born in the pandemic storm between a clap of thunder and streak of lightning. At 6 months old, she witnessed the heroic firefighters waging battle against the Palisades Fire. While most puppies would be terrified by 4 days of 24 hour air drops, Tallulah was intrigued. She cheerfully assisted in daily deliveries of snack packs donated by my employer, Barrister Executive Suites. While firefighters appreciated deliveries, they were even more grateful for the puppy ostensibly exploiting a captive audience to rehearse a burgeoning vaudeville act.
As the flames retreated and engine companies dispersed, the formative experience with firefighter’s ignited Tallulah’s appetite for heroic action. How else do I explain my 5 pound ball of fluff repeatedly intervening to protect loved ones, 2 and 4 legged, from imminent danger - both real and perceived - to her own detriment?
Being a Pomeranian with a firefighter’s fearlessness is risky business. In Tallulah’s first year, she sustained a head bite that crushed both jaws and many teeth. Undeterred by the attack, Tallulah continues to spring into action as my personal security guard.
In Tallulah’s 2nd year, experience taught her to better evaluate a situation and I learned she needs to be carried more than walked! When fire engines pass, Tallulah wiggles in my arms and frantically double paws at the air, hoping they’ll stop to bring her along. Instead, they smile at the irrepressibly joyful spirit of my fluffy little heroine with the heart of a lion, Tallulah Marlene.
