Why is your dog a hero?
After losing my 2 dogs at the old age of 14, it took me several years to even think about getting a new fur baby. I believe adding Lakota to our family was fate and came at exactly the right time in my life. One day at work I was talking to one of the RNs I supervise and I always admired her fluffy dog and how much she loved him. I longed to have that feeling once again but was so apprehensive. During Covid, as everyone was, I was either isolated at home or managing a very busy ED/ICU and mental health unit. There was not much joy to speak of as we all dealt with the seemingly constant waves of the pandemic. But…Lakota was placed in my life at precisely the right time. He gave me joy when I came home after all the long tiring days at the hospital. I recently embarked upon furthering my education as a psychiatric nurse practitioner and have witnessed how important loving and caring for a fur baby is an essential part of therapy for the patients I care for. He has become my therapy dog and brings so much joy to my life admist all of its challenges. My family can tell you on my days off, we go everywhere together and he has become just like my child. Whenever I take him out, I love to see all the smiles and attention he gets because he is so big and fluffy! It’s nice to be able walk down the street and greet strangers after 2 years of mask wearing and social distancing. I wouldn’t trade him for the world!
