Treasure to Hickman County because...
A very rural county, the roots of an agricultural era where small farms prevailed remind us of a way of life that is fading. This old barn on Copperas Branch is a token of those times. The small farms of yesterday depended on large barns to shelter cattle and mules, hang and cure tobacco, store ear corn, and feed a few sows and pigs. Children played in the hay lofts building forts with hay bales; young men sweated with pitchforks moving loose hay; cows grazed below in winter nights on the summer's harvest. Some old men hid their cache of moonshine. Cats lined up morning and night for a squirt of milk from the farmer milking the cow for the day's milk at meals. Most likely, there are remnants of old equipment no longer used still stored within its shadows. The initials of young men carved into the interior walls record their time there. History is preserved there for a while until the weather and time return the structure to the earth.
