Founded in 1884, the
Gifford Cat Shelter in Brighton, MA was a pioneer in creating an environment that does not confine animals to small, movement-restricting cages and does not practice routine euthanasia.
Our mission is to provide a safe haven for stray, abused, and unwanted cats until they are matched with their permanent loving homes. We uphold this mission by providing food, housing, and veterinary care in an outstanding cageless environment. We are unique in our emphasis on admitting stray/rescued cats and special needs cats and providing them with prescription diets, medication, veterinary treatment and surgery as needed.
Our adoption program includes careful screening, with 1 to 1 counseling sessions and careful reference checks. On-site adoption ambassadors assist potential adopters by providing information about each cat's personality and needs.
The Cutest Pet Contest is a part of our annual fundraising event, which is our largest fundraiser of the year. Over the past few weeks, we have been carefully balancing our commitment to the Gifford Cat Shelter community with our desire to be part of the world's efforts to "flatten the curve" of COVID-19. Since all of our support comes from fundraising and private donations, the success of this virtual fundraiser is critical in helping us to provide food, housing, veterinary care, and medication to hundreds of cats each year.
