Hello Friends of Forever Husky!

This is my favorite picture of Harley and Butters.
Butters is my special furbaby. When he was just five weeks old he had an accident that left him with a severe skull fracture. To survive, Butters needed to have a titanium plate implanted in his head. His odds of survival were incredibly slim but this tiny husky, who at the time weighed less than five pounds, fought through with an admirable resilience. Even though his long recovery was plagued with petit mal seizures and puppy headaches, Butters pushed through it all with love, squeaky toys and peanut butter!

However, a few months later, they found that Butters had developed hydrocephalus from his early trauma. It was causing him to lose vision in his left eye. Once again, the doctors told me that in order to give Butters the best chance at life they needed to contain the damage the hydrocephalus had already caused and implant a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt in his body to drain the excess fluid. He went into surgery and came out looking like a half-shaved Frankenstein. During his recovery, Butters was not a fan of being confined to his crate but he definitely learned to enjoy the simple things like puppiccinos, soft blankets and binge watching television shows.

Since then, Butters has made quite the recovery and will celebrate his first birthday on December 23rd. With all that Butters has gone through, it truly has been a blessing to be there by his side. I've seen him grow from the puppy whose odds of survival were slim to none to the incredibly loving and energetic furbaby he is now. I think that given all these medical issues, most people would elect to say goodbye in the face of all the medical expenses. However, Butters has taught me so much about how mindfulness and just being present in every moment can help you appreciate life and strengthen your resilience. It is my hope that I can learn from my experience with Butters and allow others to see what perseverance can help you achieve in life. Never give up hope.
