Maggie was adopted from our local SPCA as a young, pregnant dog. Though her puppies were adopted she remained at the shelter and during her stay acted both as a foster mom for motherless pups and as the SAFER test dog with other dogs coming into the shelter.
I met Maggie on my way to adopt a Whistler Sled Dog - I said to our shelter director "I am going to adopt a WSD, but if for some reason I don't, I will come back for her" - I came back without a WSD to find that Maggie had been adopted to a family. It was bittersweet as I could remember her eyes and playful manner and my immediate attachment to her. A month later I called the shelter to sponsor a dog and asked if we had any seniors or mothers in care. The response was not what I had expected. Maggie had been returned 'escape artist'. I didn't sponsor Maggie - I filled out an adoption form.
