Nine-month-old littermates Liam and Chloe arrived at FOHA as Leonidas and Cleopatra in the summer of 2015. Terrified of people and deeply bonded to each other, they began attending weekly dog socialization at the shelter, where their enjoyment of playing with other dogs (and each other) somewhat raised their tolerance for having people at the other end of their leashes. As a FOHA volunteer, I met them when they attended their first dog socialization session, and I began walking them weekly with another volunteer for the next eight months as I simultaneously searched for a house. When I closed on the house, I adopted “the puppies,” as I had come to call them, and they turned eight this month. They are still fearful of new people and situations but fortunately do not have to encounter them very often, spending most of their time tearing around their half-acre fenced backyard or sprawled across their matching dog beds!
