Dachshund Adoption Rescue and Education, Inc. (DARE) views its mission as increasing public awareness against animal cruelty and overpopulation while rescuing and re-homing displaced and unwanted dachshunds and dachshund mix dogs primarily throughout the North Central region of the state of Florida, in the Continental Unites States.

We do this by:

  1. Rescuing and socializing abandoned, neglected, abused, orphaned and/or surrendered dachshunds and dachshund mixes by providing temporary safe shelter and medical/dental treatments as needed.
  2. Procuring temporary foster homes and permanent new homes for rescued dachshunds that will provide a safe and nurturing home environment.
  3. Ensuring no dachshund shall be adopted for the purposes of breeding or scientific/medical experimentation.
  4. Providing education to the public on the dachshund breed, puppy mills, and responsible pet guardianship including, but not limited to, humane animal care and spay/neuter practices.
  5. Displaying courtesy, respect and fellowship toward all volunteers in appreciation of services and support rendered to dachshund rescue and to promoting enhanced teamwork among all rescuers.

A little about me...
Ezzie was the perfect queen as any Dachshund should be. She loved being in the car, and would stand on the window with her whole body out the windows, and require you to hold her hips so her ears could fly in the wind. She was the fun police and although she loved going down the slide, she would run and bite the butts of anyone on the swings! She required anyone in the room she was entering to make a big deal about her walking and caused a scene if you did aknowledge her. She had many different beds around the house (laundry bed, shower bed, car bed) but her floor bed was the size for a great Dane, and she refused to share. While sleeping in the main bed she had the top half made specifically for her, but often chose to sleep in the middle of the bed diagonally taking up 75% of a queen bed. She loved children, and had her special ones that were her "kids" who also had to make a big deal out of being around her. Her boyfriend "Winston" was a quarter of her size, but whenever they got to play her feelings for him were obvious, she wasn't subtle. Even though she was a lady, she had a secret interest in the cat litter boxes, and would" help" when it was time to clean them, she developed her own routine around cleaning time. Speaking of routine, she would insist on many "Ezzie hours" throughout the day and night, and made everyone get on the floor to HAND feed her. She developed a weekend routine where she would lay on her shower bed, and begin "ruffing" at you subtlety when you weren't getting ready to take her to her bubye quickly enough. He had a special dislike for any type of delivery person, and often would end up chasing the UPS driver at least 2 blocks as he drove away. She was almost pepper sprayed quite a few times, despite her being so small. Ezzie was and still is the light of most peoples lives, and wouldn't have it any other way. So much so that even after her passing, all three of her feline siblings have taken on many of her characteristics and her habits.
