Tell us your pet’s story
Maya was the first cat that was MINE. I got her after college. I had just moved to another state where I had no job, no family, and the only person I knew was my friend Mary who had actually moved with me.
I had just started a job and had gone to the humane society for some 'fur therapy' with Mary. I had no intention of adopting, but one look into the cage and I locked eyes with the cat that the shelter staff joked was the 'houdini' of the cat world. She was bold, she was bossy, and she was quirky. And she was mine. She even named herself, as she would often walk around going 'mmmmmm' to herself. Going through M words, she hummed when I said 'Maya' (told you she was her own cat!)
Shay belonged to Mary, and even though the two cats could not have been on opposite ends of the pet spectrum, they soon became fast friends just as Mary and I were. They played together, they slept together, and they cried for each other. One week Maya did a disappearing act, slipping out a window screen. Although she was eventually recovered, for the entire week Shay cried and would walk into a room and flop onto the ground like she didn't have the will to live, clearly grieving for her friend.
Maya and Shay provided us with laughter and hours of entertainment. No matter how crappy a day I had, I could always count on her doing something out of the ordinary and completely unexpected that would always pull me from my dark thoughts. They always were getting into trouble or finding something to entertain themselves with.
