Essie, previously “Esmeralda,” was brought to the CASPCA after being found as a stray in Fall 2023. Only 4 lbs at the time, the CASPCA veterinary team determined that she was diabetic and would need to be treated with insulin for the rest of her life. While her medical condition and older age made her unsuitable for some prospective adopters, her foster mom, a pre-veterinary student at UVA, fell in love with her sweet yet sassy spirit and officially adopted her in January of 2024. Essie loves napping with her mom, stealing food directly off mom’s plate, and chasing her shrimp toy around her apartment. She is thriving both medically and emotionally and enjoying living out her golden years in Charlottesville with her human family, as well as her sister “Puff” (bearded dragon) and cousin “Barkley” (golden retriever).
