Your Rescue Story
Abby is 14 years old, but young at heart. We rescued her from what used to be the ‘Pets for Life’ foundation in Red Deer at the young age of 4 months old. We were ‘window shopping’ and I asked how much the doggy in the window was. 🐾
Abby was found and rescued on the side of a highway, with her mama, in a box with six of her siblings, who were unfortunately not as lucky as Abby. These pups were clearly tossed and left. Abby was, and still is a strong survivor. When Abby first arrived home with us, she was ridden with anxiety and fear. She seemed to wonder when the next time that she would be abandoned would be or when she would have to search for food again. We went through a phase of approximately 4 years where she was extremely destructive when we left the house. We went through a couple sets of furniture, area rugs, baseboards, drywall, and three coffee tables. The last coffee table we bought was stone. She still tried to chew that one. We tried kennelling and an exercise pen with little success as she would chew through both. She would ‘counter surf’ looking for anything she could find, eventhough she was fed daily, and fed well. We worked with her in several different ways and sought support from outside sources. It took time, it took patience, it took pure, true love and eventually she began to trust us. When I look into Abby’s eyes today, that is exactly what I see reciprocated, pure, true love and trust. This begs the question- who rescued who? Abby has seen us through many of life's milestones including our marriage, the birth of both of our girls, along with 4 other rescue pups, 2 that have gone before Abby. Abby is a humble and gentle dog who often puts others before herself. She is loyal and genuine.
Abby has recently been diagnosed with spinal arthritis. This is beginning to affect her back legs more significantly. Yet, she gets up everyday and does her very best. She is still the only dog who does all of her business in the dog run. The other dogs cheat and do their business on the deck. We take one day at a time with Abby. She enjoys her walks, eventhough they are a little shorter now, a good meal, some treats and family time. One of her favourite things to do though is lay in the grass outside and just listen to the wind and smell the breeze. This is when she looks her happiest. The photo I submitted is of her in our garden. She loves to literally lay in the garden box and eat the fresh peas right of the vine. It makes her happy and actually smile. Dogs live in the moment. A page we could all take from a dogs book. When Abby’s moments are happy, so are mine. So I ask again… who rescued who?
