Your Rescue Story
We live in a small central Alberta hamlet and in 2022 had noticed for a couple of months that a stray cat was wandering the neighbourhood. She didn't seem feral, but kept her distance if we approached her. Whenever we were doing yard work or just out for a walk, the cat was usually nearby and keeping an eye on us.
When November and the cold weather started kicking in at nights, she set up camp on our deck by the back door. We gave her food and shelter in our heated garage, and with the help of her tattoo and Medicine River Wildlife Center managed to track down the Vet Clinic where she had received care in the past. This lead to the previous owners, who revealed she had been missing for several months. She had possibly gotten into a vehicle and been accidentally carried away to eventually end up in our area.
At this point in late December I had grown quite fond of the cat we had named "Gracie", and while making arrangements to meet with the owners commented that I had actually been thinking about adopting her. Since they lived on a farm and had several cats already guarding the barn, they said, "Well, if that works for you it looks like she's found herself a new home."
That worked for BOTH of us just fine. Now to figure out the best way to break this news to my partner and our current three cats.
We haven't regretted the decision at all! Gracie loves being an indoor cat with a few outdoor privileges. She quickly made friends with two of her peers, but our Calico took a little more time to settle into the idea of a new family member.
