Pesto was a big fat, chatty lady who touched the hearts of many in our community. She loved to snuggle, sleep, eat, and had the most explosive zoomies I've ever seen.
When I was little, I was regularly visited by Pesto's big, pregnant mama who lived next door. Unfortunately, she was rather neglected. In fact, soon after giving birth to her litter, her neglectful owners were evicted and they abandoned the cats leaving all the doors open. I was able to rescue my little baby Pesto, but her siblings, mom, and dad took off and were never found.
Pesto and I grew up together, and she grew to be my best friend. We did everything together, and she never let me go anywhere without her.
Due to an awful domestic situation she was taken, abused and left for dead. For six months I moved mountains to find her! With so much support, kindness and help from veterinary clinics, shelters, complete strangers, friends and family, we were reunited!! She had been healed, cared for and fostered by a community with enormous hearts. And after all that time apart, after all the healing, we bounced right back to our good ol' days of cuddles and cat treats.
When my chonky Pesto was 10, she was diagnosed with acute kidney disease, which sadly, excelerated quickly resulting in complete kidney failure. At each veterinary hospital and clinic we went to there were those caring people who remembered the trials she had already seen. She was reunited with many of the friends in our community who helped her when she was taken away and she made new friends at all the vet spots that she was taken to. Together, we all made the most of her last few days.
Raising Pesto, fighting to get her back, fighting to keep her alive, and eventually letting her go coupled with the enormous support and the kindness showed to us by strangers, has inspired me to become a foster person for cats in need, as well as go into the field of veterinary studies. I know that Pesto's chonky legacy can live on through helping to raise money for the BCSPCA, a part of the supportive community for which I am so grateful.
