Falco, a likely Doberman-German-shepherd mix, road-tripped all the way from California as one of the many rescues and became a B.C. resident in 2019.
Not long after his arrival, he taught our family how much respect and patience we owe our canine companions. It has been a learning curve to understand dog language, most especially their fear-based reactions. We realised that there are extremely anxious dogs out there living with many limitations. Large dogs with ingrained anxiety, like Falco, require long-term behavioural management within their smaller living environments as they are faced with safety concerns. However small or large, they are deserving of our compassion. It takes support from other loving family members, friends, good veterinarians and other canine professionals to make Falco feel comfortable in his small world. We have been lucky to have them all close by.
Falco likes the fresh air in the yard, and his leashed walks in the park where space from people, dogs, and traffic is ample.
One of his daily mischiefs is snatching his shih-tzu brother’s rawhide, which doesn’t always succeed.
