Our darling Gracie Mae is now a senior dog of 11 years. She came to us as a rescue from Louisiana, USA where she had been brought back to the rescue twice before we adopted her. We drove down to pick up Gracie and we met halfway in Cheyanne, Wyoming. We stayed at a hotel in the middle of a snow storm and she immediately greeted us and settled in for a long sleep. Gracie Mae was 15 months old when she came to her forever home. We resided in the city of Nanaimo British Columbia but moved to our hobby farm just outside of Nanaimo in the forest. This area has, at times, bears, deer and the occasional cougar passing by. We have some farm animals (4 sheep, a dozen or so laying hens, some ducks, two rabbits and fish in a pond). Gracie was a city dog and at first was fearful of so many new smells. As time went on we learned that Gracie Mae loved to live on her five acres and howled whenever an animal came too close to the fence. Over time Gracie became a really good farm protection dog. We learned she had a particular dislike for bears and would howl and run along the fence when they went by but never bothered with deer. As local neighbors have lost sheep to bears in the past we knew this was important. We would check our trail camera and sure enough there was always a bear moving along, fearful of her big booming voice. Some of the neighbors mentioned they were glad she howled to disrupt bear activity as they have livestock pets as well. Her nose has never really been wrong. She howls very seldom without purpose.
Gracie Mae has a very distinctive face, with her wrinkles and rolls. She loves her family, neighbours and always loves a good tasty chew.
She also loves going for slow walks so she can sniff everything, car rides, ear rubs and having a howl-off with her dad.
We love Gracie Mae and think she would make a great model.
