My one-eared assistant, Chester, was abandoned as a kitten at a feral cat colony that I maintained for 12 years with my friend Imre. Because domestic cats were sometimes left there, with VOKRA's help we fed, medicated, fixed and found them homes. I knew this little fellow was not a feral cat as he was starving. His long, silky fur was filthy and matted into lumps and the ferals didn't want him around. The day I found him bleeding from the neck was the start of our journey together. I scooped him up and took him screaming to the vet. They fixed him, sewed up his neck and shaved off the fur matts. With the missing ear, the neck stitches and the bald spots, he looked like he'd been sewn together from 6 different cats. He knew he looked bad and he was embarrassed but he let me touch his forehead. We decided right then that we could manage together just fine. It's been 12 years and he's still not a cuddle bunny but he is beautiful, smart, independent and I couldn't imagine life without him.
