We were volunteering 4 1/2 years ago with another rescue organization. When cleaning the communal rabbit building, I saw a small black bunny by my feet. I always liked to pick up bunnies who were close to me, to see if they would be good adoption candidates. He was too easy to pick up. I petted him for a bit and set him down. Now, if you have worked with rabbits, you know he should have scampered away. He didn't. He didn't even move. Other bunnies jumped over him and still he was motionless. I knew something was seriously wrong. We finished cleaning and took him straightaway to a rabbit veterinarian.
She examined him, did an x-ray, and a blood count. The blood count was so low in red blood cells that she did not even know why he was still alive. The x-rays helped her make a diagnosis of Coccidia, a parasite infection common to young and /or stressed rabbits. She told us that she did not expect him to live overnight, but provided medicine and said to offer him spinach leaves to try to build up his red blood cells. I suggested that we also feed him Critical Care, by Oxbow, and she concurred
We took this little guy home and he looked so sad. We set up an extra pen and all he could do was rest his chin on the rail. But, with the medicine and Critical Care, his eyes seemed to brighten. Urine output was good. He did make it through the night but still no "bunny poops." Still, we were encouraged. He continually improved and then, after night two, he greeted us in the morning with eight bunny poops! Success! We knew his system was working and he would make it.
Our bunny vet called the next day for follow up. She was very amazed that our little guy had recovered and was full of energy. We didn't want to take him back to the group shelter, so kept him at home and thought we'd look for a good adoptive home.
Well, you can guess the rest. This bunny had worked his way into our hearts and found his "forever home." Ours. We re-named him "Lucky" for obvious reasons. He has just celebrated his 5th birthday. He has been the perfect rabbit. He doesn't chew the house, loves his playtime, and is most lovable. Perhaps he knows what happened and is thanking us by being such a good boy? Tears still come to my eyes when I think how wonderful it was to have saved this pets life!
P.S. Lucky also make guest appearances at BCSPCA Summer Kids Camps in Kelowna and Penticton, to help children learn about house rabbits.
