My Pet Came From:
Another Shelter/Rescue
Pet's Story
Meet Lucy-fur! This picture was taken at Lucy's 'sweet sixteen' birthday party earlier this spring (and yes, she wore her emerald green party hat the whole time). Lucy was a Madison County rescue. She was found as a gangling stray, running along winding country roads. She's part Australian Shepherd, part Brittany Spaniel, and a Heinz 57 of other parts.
She and her future daddy first met at an adoption event at Earth Fare. Derek was pretty smitten with the goofy little puppy with the spotted chin, but she was already spoken for by another family. He gave his name to the folks at Madison County and said, "If it doesn't work out, let me know." Thinking he had dodged a bullet he went about his business. But low and behold, guess who called a couple days later?
Sure enough, the other family had chosen another furever friend and the scrappy little red head was available. Having just lost his beloved Sharpei, Derek wasn't sure that he was ready for a new dog, let alone a puppy. However, fate had something else in store. When Derek got home that night, he noticed a piece of paper blown up against the fence to his front yard. When he bent down to pick it up, he saw that it was a bumper sticker that read, "Dog is Love". He immediately jumped back in his car and called the Madison County Animal Shelter. An hour later Derek walked out with the happiest, tail waggingest puppy that ever was.
In the more than 15 1/2 years since Lucy found her furever home with Derek, they welcomed 'mama' to the fold and they adopted Zuzu, a mischievous little kitten from AHS. Lucy loves her family completely and unconditionally. She's protective of her people, yet yet very maternal and gentle with children and ALL felines (though the feeling isn't always mutual on that score). Lucy doesn't abide by cussing, so she's also been a very good influence on daddy.
In 2016 Lucy's daddy began an almost two year [successful!] battle with cancer. When daddy needed to rest, Lucy and Zuzu never left his side. Lucy knew something was wrong and rarely let him out of her sight. She also sensed when mama was sad and would cuddle with her until everyone's spirits had lifted. When Lucy was almost 15 she too had a large, cancerous tumor removed and came through the surgery like a champ.
These days, Lucy still likes going to work with mama, but she also enjoys napping until it's time to go run around the yard with the neighbor children and neighbor dogs. Copious snacks and tummy rubs, and kisses from her kitten also make Lucy happy. This girl makes the most of everyday and lets everyone know that she's still in the game. #enjoyingeveryday. #poundpuppiesrock #lucyfur
