Pet's Story
Mater is our "foster fail". He came to AHS from a terrible criminal cruelty case. When I was asked to foster Mater & I saw him I was shocked by his condition. He had very little hair, terrible sink issues, injuries, drastically underweight & frightened to death of everything & everyone. They really cannot determine his age since his teeth were damaged from chain chewing…but we know he is over 8 years old. We kept shirts on him for his comfort & so people would not fear his skin condition. In the months we fostered Mater good nutrition & rest restored his exterior beauty. His soft yellow coat returned and his body filled out. He also began to understand trust & love - which brought out his inner beauty. He began to enjoy friends & strangers giving him attention. Mater’s quirky personality also began to show. When he is excited & happy he smiles – which some people mistake for a snarl. Once folks find out this is his way of saying hi – they want to see it more! He has discovered the joys of snoozing on a soft bed…and our couch. Mater also knows that a trip to the pet supply store means treats. Many of the employees know him by name. He will never understand toys, but he has learned to play with our other dogs.
When Mater was healthy enough to go up for adoption – we knew he belonged with us. To look at the trust & love in his eyes was overwhelming. So we added Mater to our family. He often goes to work with me & loves to go anywhere you will take him. After adopting Mater we found that he has pancreatic cancer. Luckily he is not feeling any effects of it at this time. But we are determined to make his life happy & fun. If you see us out – please stop for a smile from Mater & give him an ear rub!
