Artist Statement (include type of art, techniques & materials used, what it means to you)I began playing drums in 2020 to help with my recovery and healing. I enjoy music and learning to play drums has been a good fit for me. I chose Spirits by the Strumbellas as I like the music and the lyrics are impactful. My story is captured in the video and shows me at many points along my journey where sadness, pain and joy are a daily mix in my life. Music keeps me engaged in whatever I am doing and I am thankful I have this opportunity to share my progress in drumming. I hope you enjoy.
Artist Bio: Tell Us Your StoryI was diagnosed in December 2017 with a craniopharyngioma after failing a growth test. Four days after diagnosis I was in surgery at CHONY. Three weeks later I finally began to wake up from surgery. My parents and siblings stayed at my bedside during those horrible weeks I am told. The first 3 years following my discharge from an inpatient rehab center were very scary, painful and yet I survived. Thanks to my family and good friends who support me and my family. I was a 3 sport athlete, soccer, lacrosse and taekwondo. I played at a high level in these sports and am doing my hardest to regain what has been lost. I have school and therapies everyday since my surgery. I had to relearn how to walk, talk and eat during the first 6 months post-op. I still have my daily challenges battling the effects of the tumor and also the damages left by 3 strokes during surgery and afterwards. With all my body and brain deficiencies, it is a struggle to get through many days and often live moment to moment. I am doing my best and will keep fighting for myself and for my family. I must find my truth and purpose in this life. I am in a 12+ academic program and am taking one college course each semester. Nothing, absolutely nothing comes easy, however, with my family and friends to support me, I keep going. I will create my destiny and not be held down by this awful tumor. Everyday is a new day and I get up every day to do the best I can.
