While Riley isn't an A&B setter, he helped introduce me to rescue and drove my passion and commitment to Above & Beyond and all our rescue pups. He was adopted from a great shelter in Kansas City where I first began my volunteer career. Riley had been taken from an abusive situation and later surrendered by his new owners due to severe separation anxiety. Although he was afraid of everything when I first adopted him, he was a huge love-bug from the very first day, and he became more confident and secure over time. Riley was that once-in-a-lifetime dog... he was fabulous with every dog he ever met, he was sweet, loving and gentle with every person, and incredibly well behaved (especially for a setter). Riley quickly became my "foster tester" dog. Every time I brought a new foster home, Riley was always the first one I introduced them to because I knew he would greet them kindly and welcome them to the pack. Riley's greatest joys were cuddling on the couch and running free on mountain hikes (Riley is the only one of my setters who was ever trusted off leash). This picture is one of Riley's happiest moments - basking in the sun and the breeze on top of an Adirondack mountain - his smile says it all! Riley died of cancer in October 2015, but his spirit will live on in my heart forever.
