Molly was rescued from Arkansas about six years ago. She has always been fearful of new people. Her buddy Otis was an owner surrender, who traveled from Ohio and Pennsylvania before coming to Connecticut.
Otis would always approach people or dogs without hesitation. As we watch their behaviors, it became obvious that they learned from each other and adjusted their behaviors as they learned. In the morning Molly would always check Otis "wake-up Otis, it's time to eat" she wouldn't start her food unless her buddy started his.
On morning hike Otis would run to greet anyone in the area. Molly would continue to be cautious. On one of our first walks Mr. Energetic Otis ran to greet a person who used a walking stick to protect himself. Obviously he is not a dog person. Molly ran to put herself between Otis and the man and got him to return to me on our trail. I'm sure our setters understand our conversation, but can we completely understand their communications? As the two buddies spent more time together they seemed to develop a special communication. Otis seemed to slow down on his approach to new people and dogs. Let's see what Molly does! Molly gradually became braver. If Otis can run to these people maybe they are our friends.
They only spent three short months together, but in that short time they helped each other understand their 2 legged friends.
